First, that no female, married woman, or girl, of whatever condition she may be, may or dare or presume to wear through the city of Florence, in the house or outside the house, any garment of samite which is gilded or silvered; nor a garment of any cloth, except of simple silk.

And in like manner none of the aforesaid females may or dare to wear, in the house or outside the house, in the city of Florence, any garment, hood, or small cap in which, or upon which, there is gold or silver, or precious stone, or pearl, or mother-of-pearl, or any embroidery, or the figure of any animal, or vair, or ermine, or rabbit fur, or fringe.

Nor may any of the aforesaid females or girls dare to wear any hood adorned with gores/frills or cut-work; nor any robe or garment ribboned or bordered, or upon which or in which there is gold or silver, or pearls or precious stones, or any other figure enamelled, or with enamel, or with mother-of-pearl, or with anything else.

Except that each of them, without penalty, may wear one simple bordering of gold or silver border, without any enamel or other thing placed upon it; the borders of which bordering may not be wider than half of one eighth of a braccio. And such bordering may be around the neckline and the sleeve-pieces of the guarnacca, and only at their extremities; and on the sleeves of the gown beside the buttoning as far as the elbow and no farther.

And on the cotta/outer garment, at the neckline and on its sleeves, only as far as the straight part of the sleeves, and not otherwise or in any other manner; provided that such bordering may not be worn on robes or upon robes that are divided, that is, of simple samite or of several samites, or that are of samite and wool, or of samite and silk cloth or camlet.

And also that upon the said robes or garments, or any of them, there may not be or be worn any turned-back lining of cloth, or of camlet, or of sendal, or of vair, or of ermine, or of rabbit, or of any other lining of whatever condition it may be; except that upon the mantle one may wear, without penalty, cloth turned back.

And whoever of the aforesaid persons shall act contrary in any of the aforesaid things shall be condemned to give to the commune of Florence, for each time, 200 lire of small florins.

No woman, or female, or girl may dare to wear in the city of Florence, in the house or outside the house, any buttoning or buttons, enamelled, on any garment, or upon any of which there is any enamel, or pearls, or precious stone, or mother-of-pearl; and no buttoning of a garment of any of the aforesaid women, females, or girls may pass the elbow of the sleeves; and no buttons may be worn upon any of their garments where there are not eyelets to fasten those buttons.

And no woman, female, or girl may dare or presume to wear in the city of Florence, in the house or outside the house, fringe, or ermine, or vair, or rabbit fur, or endisia or avertone which are turned back at the sleeve-pieces, or at the side, or at the openings of a guarnacca or cotta or mantle; and the lining of the said garments, or of any of them, may not in any way extend beyond the cloth or the openings of them. Whoever shall act contrary in any of the aforesaid cases shall be condemned in 50 small lire for each time. But from the things contained in this present chapter, and from each of them, the wives of knights are exempt and without penalty.

Likewise none of the aforesaid may or dare to wear on the head through the city of Florence, in the house or outside the house, a crown of gold or silver or pearls or precious stones or mother-of-pearl, or of any other thing, even counterfeit, under penalty of 200 small lire for each time.

Except that women and girls, for the adornment of their head, may each of them wear without penalty one garland or small circlet; but it must not be made or shaped in the manner of a crown. That garland or small circlet may be of gold or silver or pearls, or gilded, or silvered, and counterfeit, and with enamels; but not with precious stones or mother-of-pearl, and it shall be of a value of at most ten gold florins.

The said garlands and small circlets, permitted above to be worn, must first be valued by the chief official of the assay of the gold florins of the commune of Florence who shall at that time be in the said office. That official, having first taken oath to value well and loyally, must in good faith value the said garlands and small circlets; and for every garland and small circlet which he shall value, he may receive for his salary twelve small denari and no more, under penalty of ten small lire for each time that he should take more.

And thereafter they must be marked by one of the religious brothers who are chamberlains of the chamber of arms of the palace of the people of Florence, who shall be such at that time, or in his presence. And such garlands and small circlets, which shall be valued and marked in such manner, may and must be written and registered in a register by Ser Agnolo, son of Ser Andrea, son of Messer Rinaldo, notary, Florentine citizen, or by his assistant, whom the said Ser Agnolo shall appoint once or more than once; putting and writing in the said book the name of the woman and of the husband and the parish and the true valuation of such garland or small circlet.

And otherwise they may not be worn, under penalty of 50 small lire in each of the aforesaid cases, to be taken from whoever acts contrary. The said Ser Agnolo, or his assistant, for the writing of any of the said garlands or small circlets, may take two small soldi for his labor and no more, under penalty of 25 small lire if he shall take more.

Except that a garland or small circlet which should be of a value of two gold florins, or less than that, does not need to be marked or valued in the aforesaid manner.

No female or girl may wear, in the house or outside through the city of Florence, any robe or garment of samite, in whole or in part adorned with gores/frills or with such ornaments; and similarly no female or girl may wear such gores/frills of any garment of hers which are lined on the outside or turned back with a lining of fur or of any other thing, under penalty of 50 small lire for each time. And no such gore/frill may be larger than half a braccio.

Likewise no girl or young maiden who has passed the tenth year of her age may wear on her head or on her back, in the house or outside the house, cloths or garments crimped, pleated, or folded in any way, little or much, nor a garment in which there are more than eight gores or little gores.

And no married woman may go belted over all her garments, in the house at the time of weddings or of a banquet, or outside the house at any time, over a guarnacca or cotta that is lined with vair or with sendal or with any other lining, under penalty of 25 lire for each one and each time.

Likewise no female, of whatever state or condition she may be, or by whatever name she may be called, may carry or be able to carry any belt or hanging-belt or strap which exceeds the value of fifteen gold florins; nor a belt or hanging-belt or strap in which there are precious stones or pearls or mother-of-pearl or any of them; nor may she carry a purse upon which there are pearl or pearls or mother-of-pearl or precious stones, under penalty of 100 small lire for each one who acts contrary and for each time.

Likewise that no female may, at one and the same time, wear on a finger or on the fingers of her hands more than two rings, with only one pearl or one precious stone on each one only, under penalty of 25 florentine lire to be taken from each one who acts contrary for each time.

No female, married or widowed, may go outside the house through the city of Florence, in the street, shod with cotigie or with soled stockings or without soles in stocking-feet; nor wear stamped little shoes or little shoes of any colored cloth or of cloth or of samite; nor wear little buckles or tips, on little shoes or on slippers, of gold or gilded or of silver, under penalty of 25 small lire to be taken from whoever acts contrary and for each time. Except that the wives of knights may without penalty wear the said little buckles and tips.

Likewise that no female or man, of whatever state or condition, may make or have made for his children, female or male, brothers or nephews/nieces or relatives or kinsmen or friends, of the age of seven years and upward, a gown or garment or mantle that exceeds the value of five gold florins, under penalty of 25 small lire for each time against whoever acts contrary.

No female of the city of Florence, of whatever state or condition she may be, may wear outside the house, through the city of Florence, any mantle lined with vair or ermine, or with heads or throats or paws of vair or ermine, under penalty of 100 small lire to be taken from whoever acts contrary and for each time.

Likewise that no woman, or female, or girl, of whatever condition she may be, may or dare or presume to wear or dress in any robe or any garment of woolen cloth divided in colors, or serge-patterned, or checkered in silk, or clouded in silk, or woven or overlaid in silk, under penalty of 100 small lire, to be taken from whoever acts contrary in any of the aforesaid things, and of losing such forbidden robe and garment, which by full right shall become the property of the commune of Florence.
